As May begins, I find myself this morning looking out across the white sands into the Gulf and reflecting — on the power of opportunity — especially in healthcare.
Last month, I had the privilege of speaking at three events, connecting with physicians from diverse locales across the country and covering a wide range of specialties. Amidst all the conversations that I had, there was a consistent thread that seemed to emerge — how vital it is for us, as a medical community, to keep our minds and hearts open to new possibilities.
My advocacy for direct care isn't about declaring one path as "right" or "wrong." Rather, it's about ensuring that we, as physicians, are aware of the full spectrum of options available to us and our patients. Sometimes, simply not knowing about alternatives can keep us tethered to the status quo-not out of habit, but out of habit. Or as I have often quoted Dr. Arlen Myers that we’ve been “conditioned to conform.”
What's been most humbling and exciting is that these opportunities to teach have also become profound learning experiences for me as well. Through these exchanges, I've discovered a whole world of direct contracting for physicians and locum tenens that I hadn't fully appreciated before. These models, alongside Direct Care, offer powerful pathways to reclaim physician autonomy and practice medicine aligned with our core values and vision.
I believe that when we're given the chance to explore different models and approaches, we empower ourselves to make informed, intentional decisions about our careers and our care for patients. This openness isn't just enlightening-it's hopeful. It means we have the agency to shape a future in medicine that aligns with our values and aspirations.
As we step into May, let's continue to seek out opportunities for growth, connection, and innovation. Here's to a month of learning, sharing, and building a better future-together.
Thank you to Dr. Keith Smith, Jay Kempton, LynAnn Henderson, and Kelly Kempton for allowing me, Niko Casipirios and Sidney Haitoff to have an open discussion with the Atlantic Region of the Free Market Medical Association with the buyers and sellers of healthcare to come together and find solutions to bring price transparency and quality healthcare to our local communities.
Thank you to Dr. Aaron Morgenstern, Dr. Holly Shen, and Dr. Corrine Rao for inviting me to 2nd annual Flex Med Staff Physician Summit where not only did I get to build and support on what Dr. Maryal Concepcion discussed about Direct Primary Care but how Direct Specialty Care is a alive and thriving as well. I also thank you for enlightening me of the amazing opportunities that direct contracting physicians and locums doctors have been accompishing to regain physcian autonomy.
Thank you to Dr. Rosemarie Callier and the Alabama Podiatric Medical Association for the opportunity to address your members about opportunities in direct care for podiatrists and the importance of informed consent not just with our patients but for ourselves as well in private practice.
